How to Not Get Stressed by the Holidays

The holiday season is here, and with it comes all the stress associated with shopping, wrapping, cooking, and dealing with your least-favorite relatives!  Sometimes even the weather causes you a lot of stress.  It can snow so much that you’re trapped in your home, or the roads can become incredibly icy and dangerous.

So what can you do to avoid stress and have a happy holiday season?  Well, there are a number of things.  First of all, don’t let the holidays ruin the holidays for you.  How many times do you get stressed over preparing the holiday meal, buying gifts for everyone, and decorating?  Why should the holidays cause so much stress when they’re supposed to be a time of joy and togetherness?  Don’t let the holidays get you down!

If you hate shopping and dealing with the holiday crowds, stay at home and shop online so you don’t have to deal with people.  You don’t even have to get dressed!  In a few clicks, all your shopping can be over and done with.  Some online retailers even offer gift wrapping options so you don’t have to deal with that, either.

Stressed over what to buy someone?  Remember it’s the thought, not the gift, that counts.  Many people are truly happy with gift cards to restaurants or stores.  It’s not a bad gift, and it shows that you care just as much as any other present.  If your budget is causing you stress, homemade gifts are greatly appreciated.  Put your talents to use and knit someone a scarf, paint them a picture, or write them a song.  If your talents lie elsewhere, you can always give someone the gift of cleaning their house or cooking them an elaborate meal.

Dinner doesn’t have to be stressful, either.  One way of alleviating the stress here is to get others involved.  Have your children help set the table and prepare easy dishes.  Your spouse can help with the cooking.  You can also ask a few of your guests to come over early and help prepare the meal, too.  Many families enjoy working together to make their lovely holiday feast.  Another option is to assign side dishes to others to bring to the meal.

The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and happiness, so don’t let stress get in the way of that.  Relax and enjoy it!  One of our gorgeous Christmas bouquets in Kansas City, MO, can remind you to stop and smell the flowers.
